Thousands fight back through CPS-3 in the Great Lakes
What if you could make a difference in the fight against cancer simply by filling out a survey about your lifestyle, behavior and medical history, donating a small blood sample, getting your waist measured, filling and agreeing to fill out follow-up surveys mailed to your home every few years for the next 20 to 30 years?
To date, that is exactly the commitment that thousands of residents throughout Indiana and Michigan have made by enrolling in the American Cancer Society’s third Cancer Prevention Study (CPS-3).
Now in its second year enrolling participants in CPS-3, the Great Lakes Division is hosting CPS-3 enrollment sites at 15 Relay For Life events throughout the summer, more than double the number of enrollment sites hosted by the Division in 2008. At the time this article is being written, more than 4,800 people between the ages of 30 and 65 who have no personal history of cancer have enrolled in CPS-3 throughout the GLD, and there are still four events to go this year!
As a point of pride for our Division, the Great Lakes was the 2008 nationwide leader in enrollment per event, averaging 367 enrollees per event – more than double the nationwide average! Still, much work remains to be done to help the American Cancer Society enroll 500,000 men and of various racial and ethnic backgrounds in this groundbreaking study to help identify the lifestyle and behavior factors that cause or prevent cancer.
As with all of our programs and services, the American Cancer Society has relied heavily on talented and passionate volunteers whose dedication has resulted in entire communities rallying to support this study. Volunteers such as Pam Jacobs, CPS-3 chair for Relay For Life of Rockford, engaged dozens of friends, colleagues and family members to assist in enrollment. In fact, Rockford holds the position of number three in the country in enrollment, at 469. Making visits to schools, worksites, participating in TV, radio and newspaper interviews were just some of the activities in which Pam and other CPS-3 volunteers throughout the Division took part.
As we move toward the end of this enrollment season, we congratulate all the staff and volunteers who have helped to make the Great Lakes Division shine in CPS-3 enrollment. We thank you for doing your part to help save lives and create more birthdays.
