Coaches vs. Cancer in the GLD
Dedicated basketball coaches across the Great Lakes Division are taking their passion for the sport and utilizing it to raise awareness and fight back through Coaches vs. Cancer. Michigan State University (MSU) Men’s basketball coach, Tom Izzo urges everyone to wear their sneakers to fight cancer, and goes all the way to Broadway to fight back! While Indiana high school coaches aim to raise funds to be in the top five fundraisers, to attend a reception in their honor at an Indiana Pacers game!
Izzo goes to Broadway
On May 6, the curtain goes up for Michigan State University Men’s Basketball Coach Tom Izzo, and his wife Lupe, in the Great Hall of the Wharton Center in East Lansing, as Izzo goes to Broadway! This cabaret style show will not only feature Tom Izzo himself, but many special guests and professional talent. Director and East Lansing native Greg Ganakas will bring his Broadway expertise to this special event that takes the passion and excitement of Spartan basketball center stage. Funds raised from the show will benefit the American Cancer Society. VIP tickets include a cast party Afterglow Reception at the Stadium Tower.
Izzo laces up his cancer fighting sneakers
Coach Izzo, the Spartan assistants, and the rest of the MSU basketball staff wore sneakers during Sunday's game on February 1, as part of the 2009 Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers awareness weekend. Tom and Lupe Izzo invited Spartan basketball fans across the state of Michigan to follow suit and support the American Cancer Society by lacing up in the fight against cancer.
The Suits and Sneakers Fundraising Challenge brings together coaches, players, and fans on the same team and provides an alternative to traditional corporate sponsorship. This challenge is a pledge-based worksite fundraiser, "Wear Your Sneakers to Work Day" that combines employee contributions with corporate matched gifts.
Participating worksites will select a day during the basketball season to encourage their employees to wear sneakers for a donation within their place of business. The Izzos launched the MSU chapter of Coaches vs. Cancer during the 2007-08 season.

Indiana high schools have fun raising funds
Indiana Coaches vs. Cancer is in full force for 2009! In Central Indiana alone, 24 Coaches vs. Cancer fundraising games are scheduled (22 high school, and two college games). The American Cancer Society has partnered with the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) so coaches could work together to spread the word around the state of Indiana.
ACS Community Representative Ben Risinger is also excited about the Indiana Pacer’s involvement in a fundraising incentive. “We have worked with the Indiana Pacers to hold our first Coaches vs. Cancer Celebration of Central Indiana. We will be inviting the top five fundraising coaches from the state of Indiana to come to the event for free.”
Here’s what’s going to be happening:
2009 Coaches vs. Cancer Celebration of Central Indiana
Who: The top 5 fundraising teams/coaches in the state of Indiana
What: The top 5 coaches will receive 3 FREE tickets to attend the dinner and basketball game (Pacers vs. Cavaliers)
When: Monday, April 13, 2009
Where: Conseco Fieldhouse, home of the Indiana Pacers. The event will be held on the Indiana Pacers actual practice court!
Why: To say "THANK YOU"
Registration for the evening will open at 4:30 p.m. with a buffet style dinner being served at 5:30 pm.
There will be a sports memorabilia silent auction that attendees can also bid on. At 7:00 p.m. everyone in attendance is invited to watch the Pacers take on the Cavaliers for free!
“I am very excited to see how the program has taken off in the state of Indiana this year. The coaches are willing, ready, and love to help us take on the fight against this horrible disease,’ said Ben.
“When I met with one coach he actually got teary eyed and told me that he is very proud of his school and community. He explained that cancer has been rampant in his family and that several staff members are battling the disease at the very moment. Then, in a lighter tone he said that next year when he has more time to plan he will work the entire month of January to help fundraise for Coaches vs. Cancer. He was just appreciative of the help and support that ACS gives the community.”
