Indiana Lobby Day 2009
Despite the third straight year of bad weather, we had a record number of 380 registrants for Indiana Lobby Day this year!

American Cancer Society volunteers braved the elements to meet with their lawmakers about smokefree air and the need for routine care costs coverage for those enrolled in clinical trials.

Speakers included Michael Kelley, a six-year cancer survivor who spoke on smokefree air, and the affects of second-hand smoke. Michael was diagnosed with a cancer commonly diagnosed in people who smoke, yet he had never smoked a day in his life. Scott Van Jacob, a librarian at Notre Dame University, discussed his experiences with clinical trials.

Other speakers included: Program Manager, Indiana State Government Relations, Patricia Ells; Division Chief Executive Officer, Nancy Yaw; and State Representative Charlie Brown, a champion in the fight for smokefree air, who stopped by at lunch to give an update on smokefree air laws and shared tips on meetings with legislators.

Event emcee Patty Avery was awarded the first IN MI (IN MY) Heart Legislative Advocacy Award, a Division-wide award given to the volunteer who has shown exemplary participation in all parts of advocacy. Chief Operating Officer, Vicki Rakowski gave Patty the award.

The day ended with a luminaria ceremony in the State House. Legislative Ambassador Cindy Cable read a poem and volunteers created their own customized luminaria bags to remember those who lost their battle with cancer. Patty Avery concluded the ceremony by leading the crowd with several rousing cheers of "Smokefree Air Now!”

The cheer echoed throughout the State House. Hopefully, it was loud enough for lawmakers to hear, and start making a difference!
